Layering properly in cold weather is crucial for maintaining warmth, comfort, and safety for athletes, athletic trainers, and spectators at outdoor sporting events. Various outdoor elements like rain, wind, sunshine, and activity level, can significantly impact your comfort. Dressing in layers helps you adapt to changing conditions, ensuring you're ready for anything that comes your way.
Check out a tip from JAG Athletic Training for effective layering to keep yourself warm and comfortable this winter season:
- Base Layer
- Purpose: Keeps you dry by wicking moisture away from the skin
- Materials: Synthetic fabrics like polyester or natural fibers such as wool that will dry quickly
- Fit: Should be snug but not restrictive
- Mid Layer
- Purpose: Provides insulation and retains heat
- Materials: Fleece, down, synthetic insulation materials are ideal
- Fit: Should allow for movement but not fit close enough to trap heat
- Outer Layer
- Purpose: Protects against wind, rain, and snow
- Materials: Waterproof or water-resistant materials such as Gore-Tex or other breathable fabrics
- Fit: Should be roomy enough to fit over your other layers without being too baggy
Additional Tips:
- Accessories: Do not forget hats, gloves, scarves, and hand warmers! A significant amount of heat is lost through the head and extremities
- Footwear: Insulted waterproof boots and warm socks are crucial for keeping your feet warm and dry
- Adjust as Needed: If you start to feel too warm while being active, remove a layer to prevent sweating. This will add moisture to the clothing and make you colder when you cease activity. Conversely, add layers or move around if you begin to feel cold.
