Lumbar strains and low back pain are common in athletes who play lacrosse with the repetitive nature of running and rotation of the spine with passing and shooting. It is important to determine what the back pain is coming from through consult with a physician to ensure treatment is appropriate for the diagnosis.

If and when all other low back diagnoses are ruled out and an acute lumbar strain is determined, physical therapy can aid in recovery. It is important to control pain and back spasms, if present, through modalities such as heat, and with gentle stretching of the low back, hamstrings, quadriceps and gluts. Once pain has decreased, it is important to incorporate a good core strengthening program to ensure spinal stability and decrease risk of re-injury with return to sport.
