Home News & Videos JAG Physical Therapy Blog Empowering Your Total Knee Replacement (TKR) Journey with Home Exercises
As you prepare for your upcoming Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery, we're here to support you every step of the way. Today, we're excited to share some exercises that you can do at home to strengthen your knee, improve flexibility, and get you ready for surgery. Let's dive in and empower you with proactive steps towards a successful TKR journey.

Understanding Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

TKR is a procedure that replaces a damaged knee joint with an artificial implant, providing relief from persistent pain and restoring your ability to move freely for a better quality of life.

Why Home Exercises Matter Before TKR

  1. Building Knee Strength: These exercises are designed to strengthen the muscles around your knee joint, laying the foundation for a smoother recovery post-surgery and enhancing your mobility.
  2. Enhancing Flexibility: Better flexibility in your knee joint is crucial for the range of motion exercises you'll do during your recovery after TKR. Starting these exercises now will prepare you for those movements.
  3. Boosting Confidence: Starting these exercises early will help you feel more confident and ready to manage the physical demands of both the surgery and the recovery period.

Interactive Home Exercises

Let's begin with exercises that are safe and straightforward to perform at home:

Quad Sets: Whether sitting or lying down with your legs extended, tighten the muscle on the top of your thigh (quadriceps) and hold for 5-10 seconds. Repeat this 10-15 times.

Heel Slides: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Slowly slide one heel towards your buttocks, then return to the starting position. Repeat this motion 10-15 times on each side.

Leg Raises: While lying on your back, straighten one leg and lift it a few inches off the ground. Hold for a few seconds, then lower it back down slowly. Alternate legs and perform 10-15 repetitions on each side.

Safety Tips

  • Perform these exercises on a stable surface to prevent any risk of falls or injury.
  • Start with a few repetitions and gradually increase as you feel more comfortable and confident.
  • If any exercise causes discomfort or pain, stop immediately and consult your physical therapist or healthcare provider. By incorporating these exercises into your daily routine, you're taking proactive steps to prepare for your TKR surgery and improve your recovery outcomes.
